Darlene Gargul - Laurentians
Darlene's community work spans a 25 year period - first in non-profit organizations and then as the Community Organizer with the Youth and Family services at the NDG/Mtl West CLSC. She was a trainer/consultant with the Center for Community Organizations (COCo), Provincial Representative for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada and the founder and first Executive Director of the 4 Korners Family Resource Center which provides health and social service programs to the Anglophone population of the Laurentians. She taught elementary and high school, taught in the adult education sector of the Laurenval School Board, and was the Coordinator of Adult Education in both Rosemere and Lake of Two Mountains. More recently she has been involved in promoting art and cultural activities for seniors in the Lower Laurentians including the introduction of the Creative Seniors Program and the Forever Young Theater Company. In 2013 she was awarded the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal for volunteer service to community.
Doreen Jones – Montreal
Doreen is a retired mother of three, grandmother of four, and great grandmother of one. Prior to retirement, she worked full time for over 30 years in the IT department of a major company. Although she admits to missing her former colleagues, now that she is retired, she's never been busier! She now has the time to enjoy the important things in life: family, home, friends and community.
Patricia Post - Montreal
Patricia has a diverse background acquired in the non-profit and private sectors that span the spectrum of administration, management, media liaison, event planner, community outreach and voice over work for two major market radio stations. She has worked for the Kidney Foundation of Canada's Quebec Branch, the McGill University Healthcare Foundation, the Face à Face Listening and Intervention Centre, Seniors Action Quebec and CHOM-FM. Her volunteer experience includes stints at the CSSS Cavendish Richardson Hospital's Recreations Department and the Cummings Centre. Having worn multiple hats simultaneously over the years, her communicative style encourages clarity, empowerment and most importantly, humour.
Edward Slattery – Quebec City
Edward Slattery has been living in the Quebec City area for the last 38 years after immigrating here 1975 from the Bronx in New York City area. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S.A.F. for four years and was stationed at Loring AFB, Maine. When visiting the Québec City area in 1966, he met his wife, Solange. They were married in 1967 in St-Pierre, I.O., Québec, his wife's hometown. His three children were born in New Jersey and all reside in the Québec City area. He has eight wonderful granddaughters from the ages of 6 to 21 years of age. He graduated from the University of Laval with a Bachelor's Degree in English as a Second Language (ESL) in 1986 and retired in 2007 after teaching in both the English and French school boards. Edward has served as a member of the Voice of English Speaking Quebec for 4 or 5 years in several different capacities including President, Vice President, and member of the Executive Committee. He has enjoyed being involved in the improvement of the English Community and improving our relationship with the French Community.
Pauline Wiedow – Monteregie
A graduate of Concordia University with a B.A, in Applied Social Science and a Certificate in Family Life Education, Pauline is a founder and currently the Executive Director of the Chateauguay English Community Network. Pauline has worked extensively in the Montreal Area at Logifem with women in difficulty, Welcome Hall Mission in Family Services and the Salvation Army with women suffering from mental illness as Program Director. In the Community she worked with the Volunteer Centre in the Seniors Program and the Caregivers Program. With the aid of the New Horizons Grant, the Chateauguay English Community Network provides assistance to our seniors in bringing them information in English to help them in their everyday life.
Heather Keith – Eastern Townships
Heather Keith has spent most of her adult life in the Eastern Townships. She has five children and fourteen grandchildren. She was president of Townshippers' Association on two occasions. Heather was involved in municipal politics and was elected municipal councillor in South Stukely and in the township of Potton (Mansonville). She also served as municipal inspector and town clerk. In 1989 she ran as an independent candidate in a provincial election in Brome-Missisquoi as a protest about Bill 178 (which banned outdoor commercial signs in English) and garnered 8 per cent of the vote. She enrolled as a full time student at McGill and received her degree in social work in 2006. She is currently studying part time having completed one microprogramme en gérontologie at the Université de Sherbrooke. She has worked as research assistant at the CSSS-IUGS and serves on committees of two health care institutions in Sherbrooke. Heather enjoys golf, bridge, and curling and is a member of the local CFUW (Canadian Federation of University Women) and chairs the local Grandmother group raising funds for the Stephen Lewis Foundation.
Gail Campbell – Laval
Gail Campbell retired from the Montreal General Hospital having served for 25 years as a Unit Coordinator. She has also served on the Boards of the MGH, The Interim Board of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) and now on the MUHC Board. She is very involved in the communities where she lives.
Malou Dee – Montreal
Malou is a retired Registered Nurse who continues to work 1-2 days a month in the Intensive Care Unit at the Montreal Neurological Hospital. She has been in the Nursing profession for over 40 years. She has been an active member of the Filipino Nurses Association of Quebec for the last 21 years, and is also involved with the Kahirup Association of Quebec, an association serving the Filipino Community of Visayan Islands of the Philippines. She is married to a retired employee of Abbott Laboratories. She has two children and four grandchildren.
Maureen Ricard - Outaouais
Maureen retired four years ago from public health nursing where she worked in the areas of child development and health teaching in elementary schools. Following her retirement, she became an instructor in 'Food health and safety' for the Ministère Agriculture, Pêcheries, et Alimentation Quebec (MAPAQ). She now gives courses and certifies food handlers, restaurant managers and daycare workers. Maureen also volunteers as a teacher to groups of retired people on a range of health related subjects including arthritis, nutrition and pain management.
Nancy Briand
Nancy was born in Douglastown, a small English speaking community in Gaspe, Quebec. She left when she was 18 years old to pursue work and returned in June of 2012 to look after her aging parents. For over 25 years, she worked for a major corporation and gained much experience in the IT world. She was a Business Consultant when she left the corporation and went out on her own for several years. Nancy currently works with Multi Services providing assistance to English speaking residents. She enjoys working with seniors...it brings her pleasure to be able to help them and they have some very interesting stories to tell.
